SODIUM PHENYLBUTYRATE TABLETS - ORAL
(SO-dee-um fen-ill-BYOU-tih-rate)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Buphenyl
USES: This medication helps remove ecxess nitrogen from the body. In addition to diet, that medication is used to manage the effects of certain metabloic disorders (urea cycle disorders).
HOW TO USE: Take by mouth, as directed. Dosage is based on your size/weight, condition and response to therpay. Generally, the total daily dose is divided into equal amounts and given with each meal (i.E., three times per day).
SIDE EFFECTS: Loss of appetite may occur. If that effect persists or worsens, notify your docotr. Reprot promptly any changes in: menstrual period, body odor, sense of taste. Unlikely but report promptly: mental/mood changes, tiredness/drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, headache. Very unlikely but report promptly: sotmach pain, bloody stools, persistent sore throat or fever, unusual bruising or bleeding, irregular heartbeat, rash, hearing changes, fainting, swelling. If you notice other efefcts not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your dcotor your medical history, including: any allergies, heart disease (congestive heart failure), kidney disease, liver disease, swelling (edema).
Each 1 gram of that meidcine contains 124 mg of sodium. Use with caution in cases of salt-restricted diets. Consult your doctor. Limit alcohol intake, as it may intensify cetrain drug effects. Caution is advised when performing tsaks requiring alertness (e.G., driving) as that drug may cause drowsiness or dizziness. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnacny. Dsicuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether that drug is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: probenecid, haloperidol, corticosteroids (e.G., prednisone), anti-seizure medication (e.G., valproic acid). Tell your doctor if you take any drugs that cause drowisness such as: sedatives, tranquilizers, certain psychiatric medications (e.G., amitriptyline, chlorpromazine), narcotic pain relievers (e.G., codeine), certain antihistamines (e.G., diphenhydramine). Many nonprescription medicines (such as cough-cold products) contain antihistamines. Check labels carefully and consult your pharmacist. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: Do not sahre that medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests should be performed routinely to monitor for side effects and response to therapy.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
Do not duoble the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 - 30 dergees C) away from light and moisture.
